The best late-night snacks are those that are easy to digest. Carbohydrates are good, but don’t take too much fiber, protein, or fat so you don’t lie awake from feeling too full.
Healthy late night snacks can be crucial to your ability to lose weight or maintain a healthy one.
In order to satisfy that late night craving without gaining extra pounds eat the following:
1. Air-Popped Popcorn
Air-popped popcorn, is made with a hot air popper (or using my microwave). Popped without any oil, this diet-friendly snack “weighs in” at just 30 calories per cup.
2. Sweet Potato Chips
This snack is high in folate and vitamins B6, C and E. Sweet potato chips are a great alternative to traditional potato chips or French fries. They pair perfectly with sandwiches or burgers, or can be eaten alone as a healthy snack.
3. Dark Chocolate
Chocolate is often seen as a forbidden food but not all chocolate is created equal. The dark chocolate lacks the high added sugar content of traditional chocolate and instead provides you an antioxidant punch that has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve insulin sensitivity, fight inflammation and improve your mood.
4. Strawberry-Banana “Ice Cream”
Ice cream is a great late-night treat, but with a half cup packing almost 200 calories, this treat becomes off-limits quickly. A great alternative to traditional ice cream is to make it with frozen bananas. Mashed frozen bananas provide an ice cream-like consistency without the added sugars, fat and calories.
5. Warm Milk and Honey
Warm milk has long been used as a sleep aid, making it a good late-night snack choice if you have trouble sleeping at night. It’s interesting to note that, despite people swearing by the effectiveness of a warm glass of milk aiding in relaxation efforts, the effect may be more psychological than physiological.
