Celebrities going to prison is rare in Nigerian but in other parts of the world it’s a normal occurrence.
Below is a list of popular celebrities who have been to prison.
1. Wesley Snipes
Once the biggest action film star in the whole Hollywood Wesley Snipes, 53, served time behind bars in 2010 for three years for conspiring to defraud the United Stated Government. He was released in 2013.
2. Lauryn Hill
On May 6, 2013 the former Fugees singer and five time Grammy winner was sentenced to three months in prison for tax evasion. On July 8, 2013 she started her sentence and on October 4, 2013 she was released early based on good behaviour.
3. Paris Hilton
There was a time that US socialite and reality TV star Paris Hilton was very notorious. In 2007 she was arrested for drunk driving offenses and failing to enter a rehab program for her alcoholic problem. Believe it or not Paris Hilton only served three days in jail.
4. Robert Downey Jr.
Before he became Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. was always in trouble. After he was caught with heroin and trespassing in a neighbour’s garden he was arrested and put in probation. After he failed to show up for a drug test he spent four months in jail. He also went to prison in 1999 for the same offence.
5. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti
It is widely regarded that Fela holds the record as the musician who has been arrested the most times. His most famous incarceration was in 1984 when he was arrested for currency smuggling. He served 20 months in prison before being released by General Ibrahim Babangida.
6. Danny Trejo
You know him as the bad Latino gangster in Hollywood movies but before hitting fame Danny Trejo served 11-years behind bars for drug and robbery charges. He was in prison from 1961-1972.
7. Chris Brown
Pop music’s trouble child Chris Brown was sentenced to 131 days in jail in 2014 for violating his probation. His incarceration did not come as a surprise to many because the pop star was always in trouble with the law. Chris Brown was released after 108 days.
8. Mark Wahlberg
He is one of the biggest movie stars in the world but in 1986 he was charged with attempted murder and assault for hitting a middle age man with a large wooden stick. Mark Wahlberg served 45 days of a two-year sentence.
9. Lil Wayne
On March 8, 2010 Lil Wayne was given a one-year prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana. He was released on November 4, 2010 two months shy of his year-long sentence.
10. Ja Rule
In 2011 rapper Ja Rule was sentenced to two years in prison attempted criminal weapon possession. He was released in May 2013 after serving additional time for tax evasion.
