The situation in the Colgate University is far from normal. Earlier this month, the University went on lockdown for four hours after reports circulated of a gunman on campus. On May 1st, 2017, an “active shooter” alert was sent to all members of the Colgate community.
You’ve already guessed that the reports turned out to be false. The perceived “threat” was actually just a Black student going with a glue gun for an art project.
The school called the situation a “misunderstanding.” But was it really? It all looks like a horrible example of the racist and prejudiced biases that exist at the Colgate University and the Educational System as a whole.
Many students of the University were left feeling outraged about the situation:
In response, Jenny Lundt, a sophomore at the school, expressed anger over the situation on Facebook. In it, Lundt posted a picture of herself wielding a giant sword, which she wrote she keeps in her room, to make a point about how her white privilege played a central role in why she faced no repercussions after she” ran around” the campus holding the sword.
It is crazy that people of color are impacted by racism in all spheres of our life including education.
